Building off the theme "Celebrity", the students embarked on a collaborative art making adventure. Each student began a piece based on the theme, and worked on it for two class periods and then switched! And then the students worked on someone else's for two more class periods... and switched again!! The students had to resolve the piece that they received on the third rotation to call "their own".
Students did not work on a piece that was started by someone in the same class period and no one finished the piece they originally began. Here are some of our Art x 3 collaborations. Click here to see more student work. Read the post below to learn more about the assignment.
This site features the work created by my art students at Haddon Township High School in the Creative Arts Class! The students' blogs (links on the right) are their personal forum to digitally document their artistic process and progress. Please look at our work and follow along on our artistic journey.

Art x 3 = U
All 95 of the Creative Arts students are currently participating in a collaborative art making experience around the theme: celebrity. Art x 3 = U will result in a collaborative work of art that is created by the combined aesthetic decisions and contributions of three different students who are known to each other only as a number.
As a reflective aspect of this assignment, students will comment on ONE of the following questions.
1. How does the media (television, internet, magazines etc...) influence what we do or who we become?
2. Compare creating art in this collaborative way with how we respond to the media and pop culture in our everyday lives.
3. Is there any value in caring about things or people who don’t know or care about you?
4. Reflect on this collaborative activity and the emotions you experienced through the process. Describe any morals or life lessons that you can take from it.

Pop Culture in the Hue of Blue
After our introduction to Andy Warhol's Time Capsules and artists who collect, each student was asked to select a color. The winner was blue! Inspired by artist, Portia Munson, we each contributed 2 blue items for our class collection. (Many of these pieces of our human life are showing up in our Pop Art Prints.) My students wrote a blog post about what our collection reveals (or doesn't reveal) about us. Check out the links on the right.

Andy Warhol...
Time Capsules, Pop Art and how we represent our culture through art...
Today we began our exploration of Andy Warhol, specifically his time capsules and Pop Art. We began a conversation about collections and what they represent of our history and culture. Why do we collect things? What types of things do we collect? What do these things say about us?
Andy Warhol used his time capsules, over 600 boxes filled with everyday ephemera, to keep things that he felt he could not throw away. Out of the Box at the Warhol Museum is a new exhibit which features Warhol's time capsules. Time Capsule 21 is an online resource where the contents have been catalogued and can now be explored.
Other artists use the idea of collecting in their artwork. During this unit we will research and respond to their work, drawing inspiration for our own artwork and how it reflects our popular culture.
The new blog assignment has lists of both Collecting Artists and Pop Artists for your research, plus some questions to help complete your next post.

Art Room 14 = Candy Land
The students are working on colored pencil drawings of a still life of candy. Quite a challenge artistically, but also because it's candy...sitting in front of them for 40 minutes! Ahhh, the torture! The payoff will come in the end with amazing drawings and a tasty treat! Here are some of their drawings in progress! Can't wait to see them finished.

3rd Marking Period Requirements
In Class Assignments:
• In progress grade on Tea Set: April 12.
Blog Requirement:
• Writing Inspired by Images: Short Story Blog Post Due by midnight April 8th.
Students will publish a piece of creative writing (short story) in a blog post that is inspired by a minimum of 3 photos of their choosing.
The selected images will inspire ideas for character(s), setting, and plot. One picture must be a work by their previously researched artist and the other two will come from the students own image library.
Example Above: Character(s): Marilyns by Andy Warhol - Setting: The Space Needle - Plot: Ladder (an uphill climb)
The story will evolve from there.....starting with the pictures! Have fun! Let the pictures expand the ideas not limit them. The images will not be literal illustrations of the story - they will be sparks.
Students must include the initial work of art and the 2 – 5 photos in the post along with the published story. (consider using pic stitch or some other collage making app to group your photos into a nice neat presentation.)

Filled with Thanks and Gratitude
This past Saturday, we hosted our fourth Empty Bowls Dinner to benefit The Foodbank of South Jersey. Our Empty Bowls Dinners have
become quite the community event, and they always leave everyone feeling full
inside - not just with yummy food (all donated by community members and
businesses) but also full of community spirit and pride. This year, we
raised $4,000, bringing our total donations after four dinners to $16,000. (wow) The
art students and the swim team hosted this year’s event, but the entire
faculty, staff and community are also to thank for making this event so
special. Maura McDermott, swim coach and math teacher, is the co-hostess with the mostest! My super fabulous art students contributed their talents, time and
efforts in creating over 575 hand-crafted ceramic bowls and also worked the
dinner. The keepsake bowl provides a lasting reminder that many people around
the world have bowls that remain empty. Below are some pictures from the
dinner.
